За плечами Тома Расселла — 19 альбомов, наполненных историями о тайных событиях и бесстрашных героях. On all of his 19 previous albums, songwriter Tom Russell has presented stories of secret events and adamantine, reckless heroes. He wrote songs about William Faulkner in Hollywood, the Manzanar camps, about a prisoner from the state. Washington, whose cellmate was Little Willie John, mentioned almost everyone (without any exaggeration), from Archie Moore to Charles Bukowski. In Love and Fear (2006), songs began to take on a slightly different form. The Pugilist at 59, Beautiful Trouble, Stealing Electricity and Ash Wednesday went beyond his usual expressive means; they were darker, more sensitive, confessional and poetic. In Blood and Candle Smoke, Russell continued to improve in this direction and recorded it in a completely new manner.
Produced with the help of Craig Schumacher and recorded at Wave Lab Studios in Tucson with members of Calexico and others, this album sounds completely different from his catalog. Russell plays guitar and sings live with the band, guiding them slightly and allowing the musicians to create an organic space around them. Instrumentally, this collaboration uses a ton of everything from mariachi and jazz brass section, artificial electric guitars, natural acoustic and mini drums, to hand percussion, mariamba, accordions, organ and piano. Backing vocals and duet parts from Gretchen Peters (songwriter) add warmth, depth and scope to Russell's compositions.
As for Russell's songs themselves, in this set they are surprisingly inspired and unusually bright, going beyond his image. Opening "East of Woodstock, West of Viet Nam" is one of two atypical sincere and open tracks on the set. The usually cautious Russell sings openly about his time in Africa in the late 60s. The monotony of the chorus only reinforces this story. Peters' backing vocals are played against the Mariachi trumpet, and the guitars create a sublime feel. Criminology blends West African highlife, reggae, and Bo Diddley elements, and unveils some of the sad life situations in Nigeria and Canada, including the story of motel employees threatening him with guns, quoting ee cummings (who rejected convention), doing music with Sir Victor Uwaifo, who was arrested for theft of paintings and other tricks. The album features great love songs such as "Finding You" with clear reverence for "Nina Simone" (Joan Didion), "Santa Ana Winds" and "The Most Dangerous Woman in America" (Mother Jones). There are also sad stories about travel to various places of forgotten, displaced or left in the past America of myths, mania and magic, in particular about New Orleans after the invasion of Katrina ("Mississippi River's Runnin 'Backwards"). In addition, several songs, such as "Crosses of San Carlos", "Guadalupe" and "American Rivers", speak in an open, free manner about the pride, history and predicament of North American Indians.
Musically, this set is quite scattered: folk, country, rock, blues, New Orleans jazz, waltz and gospel glimpses, all this smoothly merges together in the most diverse, amazing and exciting means. This is ethnic music, the branches of which are so intricate and intertwined that they are simply inseparable. Blood and Candle Smoke is completely different from Russell's previous works. This is his most musically ambitious, lyrically sophisticated album. He became a kind of songwriter-novelist. Despite the fact that he offers incredible and at times seemingly exaggerated stories, they are without a doubt the truth, which is worth studying, laughing and reflecting on it. For listeners who have never heard of Russells before, Blood and Candle Smoke is the perfect place to start. And that's all after 40 years of creativity!
